The winter season is finally here. With the temperatures dropping and snowy wintery mixes, Pet Parents are left asking: Do I still have to groom my dog during the winter months?

The answer to this question is Yes. Many Pet Parents believe that their dogs need every ounce of fur to stay warm; which is not necessarily true. Dogs that have longer hair still need to be groomed. Neglecting to properly groom long haired dogs can lead to extremely tangled and matted hair; which is even more painful when removing. Having tangled and matted hair can cause exposure to more moisture; which can lead to skin irritation and who wants to see their fur babies in pain?! For dogs with short hair, doggie sweaters and apparels are highly suggested for the colder temps.

Let’s take a further look into maintaining your dog’s grooming regimen throughout the winter months.

Bathing

Dogs can have baths during the colder months; just preferably indoors. If their coat is kept clean and conditioned, they will be less prone to matting. While bathing your dog, use a mild shampoo and massage into skin. Once applied all over the body, rinse with lukewarm water. Applying dog conditioner is a step you should not miss during the winter months. Conditioner helps with winter dryness of the skin. Once all rinsed out, grab your Raypet WetPet Towel and gently pat and rub the towel with the fur. Keep your dog indoors until completely dried.

Ear & Eye Care

After bathing, use Raypet’s 4 x 4 facial wipes to remove any eye goop from face. You can also gently apply the wipe in your dog’s ear to remove any dirt or water from the bath.

Brushing

Another thing to do after bathing is to brush your dog’s coat. Working from the skin to the top of the hair, this will help with tangles. Majority of dog breeds should be brushed several times a week to prevent tangles. It’s also very common for your dog to shed during the winter. Brushing out the loose hair will help prevent matting.

Quick Suggestions

During the colder months, the weather can be fairly unpredictable. Keeping our WetPet Towels handy can help with dirty paws and wet fur. Gently massage the towel on your pets’ fur to remove excess water from rain and snow. Our towel works great for wiping paws off as well.

Grooming your dog during the winter months is necessary when it comes to their overall health. No matter the season, you should always have upkeep on your dog’s grooming. There’s nothing more rewarding than having a clean, fluffy fur baby to cuddle to during the cold weather.
